How is PCNL done?

At the beginning of the procedure the anesthesiologist will administer general or spinal anaesthesia to the patient.

Using a nephroscope the stones are equalised fragments into smaller pieces using a laser or a lithotripter and removed.
At the end of the procedure, a DJ stent and if needed a nephrectomy tube is placed.

What to expect in the post-operative period ?

Antibiotic injection is given to prevent infection.

The patient is given a liquid diet after PCNL surgery and gradually shifted to a solid diet.
The urinary catheter placed at the time of surgery is removed after 24 hours.

What are the precautions to be taken after discharge?

Most patients have an uneventful recovery after discharge.
For the first few days patient may notice some blood in urine which gradually clears.
A mild pain in the back may be experienced while passing the urine.

Patients are advised against heavy physical work or exercise for at least a month after surgery.
Normal routine work can be resumed 3-4 days post-surgery.

When is the DJ stent removed?
